Acting with commitment is the solution for environmental sustainability

With constant population growth around the world, environmental sustainability has become a crucial issue with regard to the preservation of our planet, increasingly demanding that we advance this agenda with assertiveness and solid investments, in addition to consistent commitments socioenvironmental. Aligned with this importance, Brazil is a signatory to the main international agreements on the environment and climate, having been one of the countries that adhered to the sustainable development goals set forth in the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations Organization.

Around here, we have solid environmental laws, the result of the rapid transformation of soils, waters, atmosphere and even animals, and positive initiatives that aim not only at sustainable development and environmental protection, but also at ensuring a dignified existence for the population. . Article 225 of the Brazilian Federal Constitution is an example of this, by proposing the common right to an ecologically balanced environment and imposing the duty to defend and preserve it on the public power and the community.

Considering that we are recognized as the richest country in biodiversity in the world, it is natural that we play a greater role in raising awareness about the importance of preserving biological diversity, ecosystem services and landscapes in all ecosystems on the planet. In this context, companies must take a position that enhances this reach. After all, the success of the business is also measured by the transformations we carry out in the things around us.

Bracell, a company in the pulp and paper sector, was born with a strong purpose in terms of sustainability and drives the growth of its businesses in line with the circular bioeconomy, climate management and innovation . Among the company's initiatives, I would like to highlight, with appreciation, the One to One Commitment, an initiative launched last year, in which there is a commitment to protect, conserve or restore one hectare of native forest for each hectare planted with eucalyptus until 2025.

In less than a year, the program that helps protect areas in the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Caatinga biomes has already reached 82% of the target, that is, 0.82 hectares of conservation for each hectare planted with eucalyptus. Accompanying these results is a reason for satisfaction and a great incentive for us to remain committed to sustainability. Each step towards environmental awareness and the adoption of sustainable practices strengthens our conviction that we are contributing to a better future.

In addition, initiatives like this contribute to the protection of native forests, as well as expands, through the restoration of ecosystems, the sequestration and stock of carbon. And it is this role that companies must assume to promote a movement based on example. After all, it is only in this way that we will be able to multiply the positive effects necessary to promote the planet's urgent demand for health.

The main starting point of environmental sustainability as a concept is to find a balance between consumption patterns and production processes with the integrity of the ecosystem through the preservation of air quality, soils, waters and living beings. Despite its complexity, it is possible to build a greener and more conscious future for everyone, but for this, cooperation and commitment on all fronts, whether governments, companies or individuals, are not only necessary, but urgent.
